What you will do
Reporting into an Engineering Manager and working under guidance of our Senior Principal Engineers, this is a key role, providing technical leadership across one or more teams delivering key parts of our strategy to build and own the industry’s best sports betting and trading platform.

Principal Engineers are key technical decision makers and leaders.
How you will do it
- Owns the technical vision for their team(s)
- Take a leading role in designing, implementing and operating our products and platforms
- Drive team focus on technical delivery goals whilst balancing quality and user value
- Work with our product teams and other disciplines on short, medium and long term technical strategy
- Hands on with deep and current technical expertise in your area of specialism
- Work with engineering managers in developing staff and evolving our teams
- Mentor other engineers in your area of specialism
- Coach and encourage the team to be autonomous in their work
- Be clear and set a clear direction
- Builds systems that serve as a definitive example for engineers
- Be a disciplined custodian of the software design of our products
- Support Solution Architects in designing technical solutions
- Utilise extensive experience with microservices to your advantage
- Advocate and evangelise engineering best practice
- Have familiarity with security and operational best practices
Normally based in our Leeds city centre tech hub, you’ll enjoy being part of a strong team culture, with the flexibility to work remotely around that. You will be part of a global team.
Our technology stack
Technology is at the heart of everything we do. We build our software with stability, scalability and flexibility in mind. As such, we need to have a platform that can support this. We have a vast array of technologies that we utilise and would expect experience in the following:
- AWS or another cloud platform
- Event streaming e.g. Kafka
- CI/CD utilising technologies such as Jenkins or GoCD
- Java or similar JVM flavoured language
It would also be useful to have an understanding of:
- Message queues e.g. RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ etc
- SQL Databases e.g. MySQL
- NoSQL databases e.g. Mongo

- Our engineers work closely with colleagues in all positions, so communication and interpersonal skills are important for this role
- Effective Principal Engineers are T-Shaped, we expect deep expertise in one or two areas but an essential knowledge across the Software Delivery Lifecycle – our most senior engineers are able to jump in where there may be a gap to help keep work flowing
- Modern software engineering relies on iterative, incremental development and fast feedback – we expect a good understanding of the mechanics of this including a solid understanding of automation and its role in modern software delivery
- Have experience of working in a modern agile environment (e.g. Scrum / Kanban)
- You will be comfortable working independently or collaboratively with good time and prioritisation skills

The salary for this job is based on experience, so whilst we are not able to go into detail at this stage, we can say that we offer great salary packages and a discretionary annual performance bonus. We can also provide advice and dedicated assistance to those moving to Leeds.
